Cosmetics & Drugs Testing
We use cosmetics almost every day. But are we sure they are safe on the skin? The same question arises for drugs. With growing incidences of spurious drugs and chemically-laden cosmetics being circulated in the market, it becomes indispensable to have facilities for testing of creams and other cosmetics that can ensure the products are safe for use.
The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) regulates cosmetic products in India under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The Act states guidelines for product labeling, safety, and compliance with GMP (Goods Manufacturing Practices). Before manufacturing or importing, manufacturers/importers of cosmetics must register their products with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), which comes under the Union Health Ministry.
Testing of creams
Cosmetics, including creams, must have a proven efficacy along with a complete toxicological assessment. Testing of face packs, creams, ointments, lotions, and other cosmetics forms an important component of quality control and assurance.
Testing of Shilajeet
Shilajeet, the natural and beneficial compound found in the Himalayas, is increasingly getting popular due to its tremendous health benefits. However, with growing popularity comes the risk of the compound’s purity being compromised by unethical dealers. This arises the need for testing of Shilajeet.
Cosmetics testing includes:
- Safety testing to ensure ingredients used in preparing the formula are safe and to test the end product to ensure it causes no skin irritation, eye irritation, and others.
- Stability testing to check the product’s stability under varying humidity and temperature conditions, light exposure, and so on.
- Efficacy testing determines whether the product is as effective as it is advertised to be so.
- Microbiological testing is done to check the presence of bacteria, mold, yeast, and other microbes in the formula to ensure the product is safe and can have good stability and shelf life.
- Packaging testing to ensure the material used for packaging does not react with the product.
- Challenge testing to know how strongly a product, especially the one that has natural ingredients in it, can resist contamination when exposed to extreme conditions.
- Testing of colours is done, especially for compounds like Shilajeet that are derived from rocks to ensure their grading, and for other cosmetics to ensure the colours do not harm when coming in direct contact with skin.
