Vitamins & Minerals Testing
Nowadays, it is common to see people popping vitamin and mineral pills on a daily basis. Although many medical experts warn against daily use of these supplements, dietary supplements like multi-vitamins have almost become a household thing. As per a report published in the National Library of Medicine at the National Center for Biotechnology Information website, the Indian market has over 936 vitamin formulations on the shelves. Today, you can also find vitamin fortified foods in the market. No wonder testing of vitamins is inevitable.
Vitamin and mineral fortification of foods
The FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), in October 2016, implemented the Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2016. This was to fortify staple food items like wheat flour and rice with folic acid, vitamin B12, and iron; edible oil and milk with vitamins A and D; and double fortify salt with iron and iodine.
This was done to combat the high malnutrition prevalent among Indians with regard to micro nutrients. The logo ‘+F’ is used on the label to indicate that the food is fortified.
It is important that the fortified food undergoes a quality check and analysis at a certified laboratory to ensure that the food is actually fortified with the said nutrients.
Also, the consumer and the retailer must be assured that the food has the particular quantity of nutrients as mentioned on the label. Testing of vitamins is important.
Testing of vitamins and minerals
When it comes to proving the authenticity of fortified foods, a thorough analysis is needed to ensure the food labeling is accurate and the food contains the amount of vitamins and minerals as claimed by the manufacturer.
