Navigating Drug Testing in Delhi: Capsules, Syrups, and Quality Assurance
In the wake of rising spurious drugs in the market, especially in the Capital of India, it is important to know about testing of drugs in Delhi . The Department of Drugs Control, Government of NCT of Delhi, plays an important role in regulating the manufacturing and the sale of cosmetics and drugs. The city harbours 13 private drug testing labs approved by the Directorate of AYUSH.
The department grants license to drug manufacturers. The drugs are released in the market only after they pass a series of stringent tests and analysis.
Testing of drugs in Delhi
Delhi also harbours the head quarters of The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) that comes under the Directorate of General of Health Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. This is the National Regulatory Authority of India that works in compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
CDSCO works in coordination with the state regulatory bodies to help maintain transparency, uniformity, and accountability in the services to ensure the drugs manufactured, imported, and distributed across India are safe, effective, and meet the highest quality standards.

Capsules undergo several quality tests such as microbial content in-process quality control tests, which are performed at predefined intervals during the manufacturing process. Other processes for testing of capsules include stability tests, disintegration tests, moisture permeation tests, dissolution, invariability tests, and others.
Testing of syrups
As per the Government of India, it is mandatory for pharmaceutical companies to test their cough syrups at government-approved laboratories before export. Testing of syrups features a stringent process as put forward by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).
Testing processes include measuring pH, testing the water used in preparing the formula, visual testing, determining the concentration of sucrose in syrup, and others. The aim is to ensure quality, safety, and consistency of the formulation.
